(1735-1826) Адамс, Джон
Второй президент США [President, U.S.] (1797-1801), вместе с супругой А. Адамс [Adams, Abigail] основатель видной династии политиков, отец шестого президента США Джона Куинси Адамса [Adams, John Quincy]. Юрист; начал политическую карьеру как критик Закона о гербовом сборе [Stamp Act]. Участвовал в Первом и Втором Континентальных конгрессах [Continental Congresses]. Его подпись стоит под текстом Декларации независимости [Declaration of Independence], в составлении которой он принял непосредственное участие. Предложил назначить Дж. Вашингтона [Washington, George] командующим Континентальной армии [Continental Army]. Сыграл важнейшую роль в создании конституции штата Массачусетс (1779). В 1777-79 - посланник во Франции, первоначально достиг немногого на дипломатическом поприще, но в 1783 участвовал в составлении Парижского мирного договора [Treaty of Paris]. В 1785-88 - посланник в Великобритании. В 1789-97 - вице-президент США [Vice-President, U.S.], проявил себя как консервативный политик, однако был посредником в конфликте между А. Гамильтоном [Hamilton, Alexander] и Т. Джефферсоном [Jefferson, Thomas]. В 1796 избран президентом США. Период президентского правления Адамса отмечен кризисами и конфликтами, такими как дело "Икс-игрек-зет" [XYZ Affair], принятие законов об иностранцах и подстрекательстве к мятежу [Alien and Sedition Acts] (Адамс не поддерживал эти меры), противостояние со сторонниками Джефферсона [Jeffersonian Republicans]. После ухода из политики вел активную переписку, в том числе со своим главным оппонентом Джефферсоном (скончался в тот же день, что и Джефферсон, 4 июля [Fourth of July, the]).
